Ministry of education and sports in partnership with river flow international has equipped 20 primary schools in Koboko district with mini science labs that will help to promote and improve practical learning and understanding of science.
The new approach primary science kits will help the lower primary classes of primary 4, 5, 6 to 7 and each kit contains various tools such as models of a human eye, the circulatory system, a microscope, and other educational items
The river flow communication and advocacy manager Margaret Olore says the kits will address the lack of science learning materials right from the primary level.
“So this is phase four and we started in 2021. Why we came up with this innovation is to promote the learning of science practically we realized that there is a gap between practical learning of science so, we felt that how about we bring this innovation to primary section basing on the new curriculum so, that when they are crossing to secondary they have the knowledge and skill to understand the projects we also want to produce learners who are problem solvers.”
Mawa Rashid the head teacher of Adumaga primary school says the science equipment has come in handy provide competent based science lessons.
Mawa said that, “the basic challenge has been lack of creativity and innovation but now the government has taking direction taking us towards ICT and sciences I think most of problems are going to solved and we are going to use these kits to educate them.”
Nyakuni Joseph the deputy head teacher Tukaliri primary school says the mini science equipment will help improve science performance in primary school.
“We have been suffering teaching some of the practical science lessons especially some topics in primary 4 and 5 where you get human body organs and this has already been solved we are happy of this innovation and we shall use them practically to improve our learners practice aspect in science,” Nyakuni said.
Aloro Habibu Muzamuli the Assistant Resident District Commissioner in Koboko says there is need to support schools to innovate their own equipment as well.
“These are equipment that require accessories in the event teachers may in future want to innovate I think that the makeup of materials also should come up clearly in the manual so that some science teacher can use the same material to innovate so that the government can be able minimize cost so that we can have more these equipment in our schools,” Aloro revealed.
The Ministry has so far distributed over 334 science kits to over 20 districts by selecting the 15 best -performing and 5 struggling in primary schools in the district. The schools will receive training on how to use the science kits by River flow international.
