Anglican dioceses of Northern Uganda cluster have planned to spend 2.2billlion shilling in organizing the national martyrs’ day celebration 2025 as organizers at the Anglican shrine.
The six Anglican dioceses in Northern Uganda cluster which include, West Lango, Lango, Kitgum, Northern Uganda, Nebbi and Madi West Nile diocese were chosen as the organizers of the 2025 national martyrs’ day celebration set for 3rd June at Namugongo where about one million people are expected to congregate according to the report by the organizing committee.
According to the organizers, the 2.2billion budget shall be financed through donations from well-wishers, Christians and state contribution as it is a national function.
The Uganda martyrs’ day is an annual celebration to reflect on the life, devotion and sacrifice of the first Christian coverts to die for the sake of the Gospel and the celebration primarily aims at spiritual renewal.
While addressing the media at the diocesan headquarter on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the bishop of Madi West Nile diocese Rt. Rev. Charles Collins Andaku revealed that apart from spiritual enhancement, they are planning to do solar installation at the shrine.
“As dioceses of Northern cluster, we want to put solar panels in that premises of the martyrs, people have been adding a new thing, but as northern cluster we feel we want to put lights allover that place and that will be our legacy, it is costly the amount is big so we appeal to you to come and support us,” Rt. Rev. Collins disclosed.
With about 1,200 pilgrims expected to trek on foot, records from the organizing team indicates that so far 1,008 people have been registered of Monday this week across the Dioceses of the Northern cluster with only 30 from Madi West Nile diocese.
Can. Onesmus Dralega the president of the fathers’ union and the diocesan committee chairman at Madi West Nile implored the Christians to take courage to trek in imitation of the missionaries.
“We encourage to mobilize people who can sacrifice the same thing the martyrs did when they gave their lives to die for sake of Christ, so far the diocese of Madi West Nile has the least number those who are there who have not given in their names please move to your nearest parish or church so that you be registered,” Can. Dralega appealed.
Equally, Rev. Julius Izatabi, the national team leader for foot pilgrims explained the purpose of the foot trekking. “The Gospel has been brought to Uganda by men and women from Europe they were hardly roads, they were hardly vehicles and even bicycles, they would trek, so why not to put ourselves in that shoe to feel how it used to be for those people to actually walk on foot for the Gospel!” Rev. Izza Tabi alluded.
The 2025 martyrs’ day celebration at the Anglican shrine will be under the theme “imitating God’s goodness by doing good.”
