Health experts in Adjumani district have warned young girls and women against the act of bleaching themselves saying that it endangers one’s life to the risk of getting skin cancer.
Ms. Namulindah Sarah, a social worker at Caritas Children’s Development Center advised ladies to learn how to appreciate themselves and men to appreciate their women in order to avoid pushing women towards the usage of such cosmetics.
“My advice to them is that we should learn to appreciate ourselves, the moment you appreciate who you are, you will not be in the position to Go for the products, and services, but if you don’t appreciate yourself that is what is going to push you to do all those things, and to the men, try to appreciate your girlfriends or appreciate your woman the way she is”, said Namulinda Sarah.
Equally, Ambayo Stephen, a local resident discouraged youth from using such drugs to beautify themselves, and said that it is the characters and the natural beauty that attracts men to talk to a woman.
“My advice to the youths is please girls let’s try to stop using this drugs of course even if you don’t use the drug, you still have a man to come and talk to you. Your characters and your beauty is still there, Ambayo elaborated.
However, Dr Ambaku Richard the medical supretentant for Adjumani general Hospital sighted that there is a fear for cancer of the skin in the near future for ladies who are unhappy with their dark colure by applying cosmetics known as hydroquinone which the government is trying to ban in the country.
“We see most of our sisters who are unhappy with their dark colure, they end up applying lotion or cream and one of the commonest creams the government is trying to ban is the component called hydroquinone which affects the Melanin pigment which give us the dark colour and that pigment has been designed by God to protect us from the effects of the sunshine, but my fear will be the high cancer cases , cancer of the skin which is called Melanoma,” Ambaku noted.
