The Archbishop of Gulu, Most Rev. Raphael P’Mony Wokorach, has launched a special emergency food appeal to support communities in the Karamoja sub-region affected by severe hunger and malnutrition.
In a circular dated 10th July 2026 addressed to all parish priests in the Archdiocese of Gulu, Archbishop Wokorach said the initiative follows an appeal by the Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, Rt. Rev. Joseph Antony Zziwa, urging dioceses across the country to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Karamoja.
The Archbishop said prolonged drought, food insecurity and poverty have left many families facing acute hunger, prompting the Church to mobilize support under the theme drawn from Matthew 25:35, “For I was hungry and you gave me food.”
As part of the emergency response, all 35 parishes in the Archdiocese have been directed to contribute a minimum of 50 kilograms of beans and 100 kilograms of maize grain or posho. However, parishes have been encouraged to exceed the minimum contributions.
The appeal will be announced during Sunday Masses, Small Christian Community meetings and other parish gatherings to encourage wider participation among the faithful.
According to the circular, the food collection exercise will run from July to mid-August 2026, with all donations expected to be delivered to Caritas Gulu Diocesan Office or designated vicariate collection centres by 15th August 2026.
Caritas Gulu will oversee the transportation and transparent distribution of the food to the most vulnerable communities in Karamoja.
Archbishop Wokorach has called upon priests, religious leaders, catechists and lay faithful to respond with urgency and compassion, emphasizing that the collective effort will help save lives and demonstrate Christian solidarity during the ongoing humanitarian emergency.
“Let us show solidarity so that no one dies of hunger,” the Archbishop appealed.
The initiative adds the Archdiocese of Gulu to the growing number of Catholic dioceses responding to the humanitarian needs in Karamoja through coordinated relief efforts.
