The communities of Ocevunzenze Village in Tilevu Parish and neighboring parishes in Vurra Sub-County, Arua District, are living in fear following a recent deadly armed robbery in the area.
The incident occurred on Friday, leaving a Congolese national unconscious after being robbed of an unknown sum of money. The robbers, armed and riding motorcycles, trekked over 20 kilometers from Arua City and fled the scene.
Festus Amayo, the LC2 Chairman of Tilevu Parish, confirmed that the robbers fired several bullets into the air to intimidate the community before demanding money from the Congolese man, who was riding a boda-boda (motorcycle taxi).
According to Amayo, even after reporting the incident to the police, fears persist about suspicious unfamiliar faces riding boda-bodas in the area. “I heard repeated gunshots within a span of three minutes. The robbers ordered the Congolese man to reveal how much money he had in his bag, but he refused. They then shot the tires of his motorcycle and fled with an unspecified amount of money. When I arrived at the scene, I only found the potatoes that the Congolese national had purchased—they had already escaped,” Amayo explained.
Meanwhile, Alfred Okuonzi, the Arua District Chairman, called on community members to share information with leaders promptly to help apprehend the perpetrators. “There has been armed robbery along the border with DR Congo, stretching from Ajonyo in Tilevu Parish to Vurra Customs. Such acts are unacceptable in Arua District. I urge the community to stay vigilant and work closely with us, their leaders, to restore safety,” Okuonzi urged.
As of press time, no security agencies had confirmed any knowledge of the recent robbery attack.
Tilevu Parish in Vurra Sub-County, along the Uganda-DR Congo border, is among several areas where cases of armed robbery, smuggling, and other crimes are prevalent.
