Arua City health Department has intensified efforts to effectively curb the spread of Ebola in the city through more strategic steps currently being put in place.
The City in partnership with the ministry of health, World Health Organization (WHO), Amref Uganda, Infectious Disease Institute (IDI), and an Ebola Task Force team now sit weekly and a rapid response team sits daily to fast trace contacts and alerts in the City.
Addressing the media after an engagement with the rapid response team on Monday May 25, 2026, Arua City’s Principal health officer, Dr.Pontius Apangu noted that the city so far has no confirmed Ebola cases registered.
“We do not have any confirmed case in Arua City, the case that came from DRC and passed through Arua City, we have been following the contacts and out of the contacts so far we followed, we actively had four tested and turned negative and we discharged them. Currently what we are doing as part of the response is, we have constituted a city task force team that sits weekly and a rapid response team that sits daily, we’re having contact tracing and responding to alerts.” Dr. Apangu stated.

Dr.Apangu revealed that among other action points being implemented include, continuous awareness creation through the media and road drives, working closely with the ministry of health technical team on ground and the immigration department to ensure movements of the people are tracked.
“We are able to reach out to all the places where there’s suspicion. The Ministry of Health has issued guidelines on the operation of the public especially in places that gather a lot of people, the markets and the schools. We work with the city education department to ensure that all the schools are able to observe and implement the standard operating procedures (SOPs) as per the opening of schools as well as the other places of gathering like the markets and the places of worship. The other thing is to engage the community to report alerts through the 67 and 67 and also building the capacity of the community to report all the non-traumatic deaths, deaths that happen in the communities must be reported, samples collected and investigated before the bodies can be released to the bereaved families and that will guide the model for burial,” Dr. Apangu explained.
Ebola spreads from person to person through direct, unprotected physical contact with the body fluids of a symptomatic or deceased infected individual. The virus enters the body of an uninfected person through broken skin or mucous membranes (such as the eyes, nose, or mouth).
Dr. Apangu called for calm while assuring that all the entry points at the border with DR Congo have been equipped with the gadget for screening, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for those working at the border and have ensured there’s rapid response following alerts from the rapid response team from the borders.
