Residents using the Muni-Ocoko road in Ayivu East Division, Arua City, are bitter over the government’s delay to respond to their demand for the construction of Woko Bridge.
They say the situation has become a serious challenge, especially during the rainy season, as children are often unable to attend school due to flooding.
Afayoa Simon, the Boda Boda Chairman of Suplex Stage in Muni, explained that, the absence of the bridge has disrupted their business. He adds that, customers frequently complain about increased transport fares, which result from the longer routes riders are forced to take.
″These days whenever the boda-boda guys carry their passengers from here, they use the downer road. Customers are now complaining as if they are being cheated on, but, at first it used not to be like that. I am appealing to these leaders to at least do something in position so that these boda boda guys do not suffer″ Simon appealed.
Dibia Didi Wilson, the Local Council II Chairperson of Nyio Ward, questioned why the bridge has not been constructed up to now, despite repeated promises. ″The persons responsible for this bridge are failing to do what is required of them. Politicians come, they keep giving promises to the community members, but at the end, we don’t see anything being done making children from the other side of Ocoko not to cross to Muni in to access education″ Wilson pointed.
Hon. Geoffrey Fetaa, the Member of Parliament for Ayivu East Constituency and a member of the Parliamentary Roads Committee, admitted the delay.
He however revealed that the handover of the site to the contractor for the commencement of construction works will soon take place. ″That situation has been very bad but we lobbied the ministry of energy to take up that work as cooperate social responsibility to the community that gave land for the substation. The work plan and design has been approved, there is going to be construction of box culvert on the bridge, maintain 2 km road between Muni and Ocoko sides with first class marram and also drilling of borehole. The handover of that site to the contractor will be on 29th September 2025″ Hon. Feta assured.
In 2020, when the government launched the construction of Arua power station in Muni, it also announced plans to construct Woko Bridge, drill a borehole, maintain two kilometers of road in the area with first-class murram and build houses for 75 vulnerable persons. However, to date, none of these projects has been implemented.
