Arua City
The youth in Arua City have been blamed for neglecting their elders, with stakeholders calling for a change in behavior. According to sources, the neglect and mistreatment of elders have become a worrying trend, with many young people failing to seek guidance and wisdom from their older counterparts.
The neglect of elders is a visible problem that has been observed in many communities. Elders, who were once revered for their wisdom and experience, are now being ignored and mistreated. This neglect can take many forms, including physical, emotional, and financial abuse.
Abitul Charles, an elder at Alengo cell in Arua City, said, “As an elder, I have seen many changes in the way young people interact with their elders," he says. "In the past, young people would seek guidance and wisdom from their elders, but now, many of them seem to think they know it all."
Abitul, who is now in his 80s, laments the fact that many young people are no longer interested in listening to their elders.
According to Leonara, a lay missionary sister, the neglect of elders is a symptom of a deeper issue. "The youth are losing touch with their cultural heritage and values," she says.
"They are not seeking guidance from their elders, and as a result, they are missing out on valuable wisdom and experience."
A Call to Action
Stakeholders are calling on the youth to change their behavior and start seeking guidance from their elders, respecting their elders and treat them with dignity.
Assumption
The neglect of elders is a serious issue that needs to be addressed and by doing so, young people can gain valuable wisdom and experience, that can help them navigate the challenges of life and it is time for the youth to recognize the value of their elders and start treating them with the respect and dignity they deserve.
