As schools prepare to reopen for third term, it is a bee hive of activities in the market with parents purchasing scholastic material and schools stocking food items in the stores.
In an interview with radio Pacis, Hellas, one of the parents who was shopping for her children shared her experience in preparing the leaners for the third term.
“As per the school items, I don’t see any change. These are like just the previous terms. The prices are the same. As parents, it’s not an easy time for us. We are running here and there. You find things are finished, it’s not easy. It is not only the schools facing challenges, but, also us as parents we are facing the same situation. We really need the schools to be so understanding.”
Samuel Bengia, the CEO of Student’s Bookshop in Arua city says that, since third term is a short term, there is low turn up for shopping.
“For third term, parents buy few things they don’t buy like for first term. From the suppliers’ side, the prices have come down. Equally, we have brought our price down. For exercise books and counter books the price has increased, but for items like Bic pens, the prices have remained the same. There is what they call go back to school where you sell things like exercise books, pens and others and there is also what we call scholastic materials where schools buy chalk, Manilla and others,” he explained in an interview with radio pacis.

Different types of beans sold at the market
Faida Night Hope, a dealer in produce at Arua main market explains more on the prices of some food items that schools buy to feed the students every term.
“Some of the beans like black army green, small in size is sold at 2,500 shillings per Kilogram, yellow mixed from Alur side ranges between 2,800 and 3,000 shillings, green beans from Hoima is sold at 3,300 shillings and the red one is between 3,000 and 3300 shillings per kilogram. For maize, it is 1,200 shillings. The price had increased up to 2,000 and reduced to 1,000 and now it has risen to 1,200 shillings,” Faida explained.
“For the Congolese when the price reduces, they stock the produce and wait for price to increase so we find it hard to predict the prices of produce in the market and sometimes you stock thinking the price will go up but in the end you make loss,” she added.
According to the ministry of education and sports school calendar, the third term commences on September 14 2025 and concludes on 5th December 2025, making the term shorter than the previous two.
