The contractor responsible for the construction of Ania Culvert Bridge in Mendoza Cell, near Christ Church of Uganda Ediofe in Arua City has been summoned by the City officials due to concerns over the poor quality of work.
The project valued at 15 million Ugandan shillings was to be commissioned on July 09, 2025. However, upon inspection, city officials discovered that, the work had been poorly executed.
Abima, the contractor in question, attributed the substandard work to insufficient funds. “The design and even the cost, which cost could not even allow us do the work as expected. We could have done nothing and say, let the culvert goes to another small area somewhere else but we thought it was a community intervention," explained Abima.
Marlon Avutia, the mayor of Ayivu Division, expressed surprise and disappointment at the poor quality of work, given that the contractor had received technical guidance before the project commenced.
“You take care of your image as a professional and you should reflect, you are a trained engineer and if we had allocated funds from your technical guidance that this money would be enough, and if you found the money was not enough, you should have informed us earlier and you did not but instead resumed work without any of us knowing, the communities will say we have coordinated to eat money," Avutia remarked.
The Resident District Commissioner of Arua Salim Kumakech therefore issued a one-week ultimatum for the engineer to redo the work. "I want response in the next seven days, we are very slow to cause arrest but this would be part of the reasons where a technical officer is going to be arrested in the City. And for the community, you be patient with us, we will do the right thing that pleases everyone," Kumakech emphasized.
Patrick Asiku, a resident of the area, has expressed gratitude to the city officials for the swift action. “We are not pleased of this work, it is a Soddy work because the drainage, the marram they have poured is mad not maram, we were waiting for this kind of meeting but since today we have heard, I think things are going to be okay," Asiku said.
The city official’s prompt response aims to ensure that the Ania culvert bridge is constructed to the highest standards, providing a safe and durable infrastructure for the community.
