The Democratic Party (DP) is voicing optimism about its prospects of securing key electoral positions in Arua City during the 2026 general elections, despite the prevailing support for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the region.
Alitia Elia, the former DP Vice President for Northern Uganda, expressed confidence in the party’s ability to win the city, underscoring the DP’s determination to make significant strides in the area.
“Arua City is hotspot for DP and we think we are capable of winning the City and put DP administration there in all the electoral positions. We are about doing credible structures, we are capable of electing leaders from cells to the parliament” said Alitia.
Fadil Lemeriga, the DP Chairperson for Northern Uganda, elaborated on the party’s strategy, revealing that they are currently mobilizing resources to support their candidates in the upcoming general elections which aims to bolster the party’s chances of success and ensure that its candidates are well-equipped to compete effectively, “All things are going to be fine, currently the party is receiving the special interests and thereafter people will be shortlisted and vetted and the party is also mobilizing resources to support its candidates at various levels and the National Executive shall sit in Moroto from August 15 to 16, 2025 to discuss some of these resolution’s to see what can be done“ noted Lemeriga.
The DP’s optimism is notable given the NRM’s strong presence in the region. However, the party’s leaders believe that with strategic planning, robust campaigning, and adequate resource mobilization, they can carve out a significant share of the electoral map in Arua City.
