The state Minister for Primary Education Hon. Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaduccu, has encouraged the refugee children to remain focused on education much as they have challenges that they are facing as refugees. She was speaking during the launch of the call to action of the Three Transformations for education in emergency at Yoro base camp on Tuesday 13th September 2022, as the guest of honor.

According to the minister, many children especially in the Northern part of Uganda and in the refugee community easily give up on education when they face challenges noting that, this has highly contributed to low level of education among people in the region. Narrating her experience to the learners, the minister says, if it was not for her resilience she would not have achieved her dream of being a doctor given the challenges she went through of being a refugee in Sudan when there were wars in Uganda years ago. “When we were in Sudan as refugees because of war, we studied under trees. When we came back, we studied under trees, I was born from a poor family but my background didn’t stop me from achieving my dreams of becoming a doctor” she said.

She however showed disappointment as she reported having spotted primary 3 kids in one of the schools in the region chewing marijuana, a local drug. “I was in a school where children were given money to take photos for IDs and the balance was for eating marijuana” the minister explained

The minister is expected to be part of the worldwide launch of the program scheduled to take place in the US on 19th September 2022 in New York City USA, as she will be representing Uganda and forwarding the views and concerns of the refugees.
