In a bid to addressing the high rate of teenage pregnancy and low class attendance of the girl child in schools, United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) and Diamond trust bank (DTB) have empowered girls in West Nile with menstrual Health initiative.
On Wednesday April 2, 2025, the team distributed reusable sanitary pads to vulnerable school girls in Lefori primary school in Moyo district as part of the “Achieve More Girls Initiative” to combat school absenteeism and promote menstrual health management under the program Strengthening Adolescent and Youth rights and empowerment (SAY).
According to Mateka Samuel the head of Marketing and communication at DTB, their target is to reach 10,000 girls in 2 years as they address the challenges faced by the adolescents in schools.
“The visit has been prompted by the news that many girls don’t go to school whenever they are on their menstrual cycl,” Samuel pointed.
Meanwhile Dr. Alex Chono the UNFPA program coordinator said their collaboration with DTB is to ensure that girls in school stay in school, complete primary school and move from primary to secondary school.
“This is because there is strong evidence to show that when girls are going in their menstruation they miss lesion that means when it comes to sitting their examinations, they will be historical and generally perform poorly,” Alex noted.
Whereas Anyanzo Terry the secretary for social service Moyo urged the beneficiaries not to sell what has been given to them to buy other items.
“Keep them for you and inform your parents about the same so that they can also help where necessary, where they fall short the parents can also added more,” Terry disclosed.
Megwera Asunta, the deputy head teacher of the school said the support is very vital to the girl child saying the support will make the girl child to remain in school and attend lesions up to the end of the day.
Atimaku Sharon a primary pupil was one of the beneficiary said the pads will help them improve on their lives as they used to suffer a lot looking for ways of getting the pads since their parents cannot afford.
