The Ediofe Slaughter house is experiencing significant hygienic challenges, primarily concerning poor waste management and sanitation issues.
The concerns were raised during an engagement organized by the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) Network.
The stakeholders, raised the concerns to the officials including the division health inspector and commercial officer, identifing critical problems such as water accumulation caused by inadequate drainage, fly and worm infestation, and insufficient slaughtering space.
These conditions compromise meat safety by increasing microbial contamination, which can lead to bacterial infections, food poisoning, and reduced shelf life.
Such risks threaten public health and undermine the quality of meat products, affecting consumer safety and the area's sanitation standards.
Kizito Dickens Acidri, the publicity secretary of Ediofe trading center committee raised these concerns to officials, emphasizing the urgency of addressing sanitation to prevent the spread of disease.
“The previous trading center leadership and the tenderer are money minded what they only do is to come and pick money and go away and they don’t mind about the sanitation at the slaughter house, even sometimes veterinary doctor attached to the facility arrives when animals have already been slaughtered and only picks money and goes away” he said.
Mike Baiga, the chairman of the Ediofe trading center also promised to collaborate with the tenderer responsible for facility maintenance to improve hygiene standards. “We are soon organizing meeting with the people who work at this facility including the tenderer to address the sanitation concerns arising from the facility as we have all witnessed here,” he said.
The division health inspector acknowledged the issues and assured they would be tackled through stakeholder engagement.
The report underscores that good slaughterhouse hygiene is essential for eliminating bacterial contamination, preventing spoilage, and ensuring meat's aesthetic and nutritional qualities.
Failure to maintain proper sanitation not only jeopardizes public health but also diminishes the reputation of the meat industry in the area.
Coordinated efforts by local authorities, vendors, and stakeholders are crucial to resolving these sanitation challenges, thereby protecting community health and enhancing meat safety standards at Ediofe slaughterhouse.
