The European Union, in collaboration with development partners such as KFW, Spotlight Initiative, the Ministry of Water and Environment, and the Ministry of Education and Sports, has launched a five-year project to restore education in 27 schools in Oyam District.
According to Benson Dila, the LC5 Chairperson of Oyam District, the project is part of a broader initiative benefiting 199 schools across Uganda. The selected schools in Oyam will receive new infrastructure, including lagoon systems, toilets, and classrooms, under the WASH project, aimed at improving sanitation and learning conditions.
Sgt. Shilaku James, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Oyam, emphasized the importance of community sensitization and mobilization to ensure the project's success.
He pledged to work with parents and stakeholders to promote school attendance, retention, and completion, starting with Otwal Sub County, through education conferences.
David Adea, the Acting Education Officer of Oyam District, highlighted the project's role in improving educational standards, infrastructure, and student welfare. The Spotlight Initiative is actively working to prevent violence against children, while UNICEF is providing scholarship grants to girls in secondary schools and small grants to primary schools, totaling 1,827,000, to address school-family initiative challenges.
Caroline Anderezeyewska, a European Union representative in Uganda, announced that the EU has invested 140 million euros in girls' education, protection, and health. She urged local governments in Oyam and other districts to take ownership of the program to ensure its sustainability.
Birungi Musa, an official from the Ministry of Education and Sports, stated that the project aims to improve education in the Acholi, Lango, and Teso sub-regions, which have struggled with poor performance in recent UNEB results.
Gira Patrick, the head teacher of Abok Seed Secondary School, expressed gratitude for the UNICEF scholarships, which are benefiting 70 students at his school.
One of the beneficiaries, Prisca Akello, shared her personal story, stating that the scholarship revived her dream of becoming a journalist, describing it as God’s plan.
