A concerning trend has been highlighted by stakeholders in West Nile, who attribute the high rate of domestic violence in the region to the diminishing emphasis on spiritual practices, particularly among Christian couples.
According to Morris Candia, a lecturer at Muni University, the lack of spiritual nourishment has contributed significantly to the rising tide of marital discord and domestic violence.
Speaking at a recent gathering at Ewadri chapel in Ayivu Division East, Candia lamented the fact that many Christian couples in the region have become increasingly disconnected from their faith, neglecting the importance of prayer and Holy Communion in their daily lives.
Adding that, the consequences of this spiritual disconnection are far-reaching, leading to a breakdown in communication, trust, and understanding between partners.
"It has been observed that during festive seasons, instances of domestic violence tend to surge, often triggered by disputes over basic necessities. Notably, however, there haven't been any reported cases of women engaging in physical altercations due to being denied the sacrament of Holy Matrimony by their husbands.
Sr. Kevin, a religious front-runner working under Ediofe Parish, echoed Candia's sentiments, urging couples who have distanced themselves from the Holy Communion to re-examine their lives and seek spiritual guidance.
The stakeholders' concerns are underscored by the alarming statistics on domestic violence in West Nile with many attributing the trend to a range of factors, including poverty, lack of education, and cultural norms that perpetuate gender-based violence.
However, the link between spiritual disconnection and domestic violence is a critical aspect that warrants attention.
