Schools in and around Arua city recorded low enrollment on the first day of the academic year 2026. Most of the schools visited confirmed low turn up of learners with a few that had up average leaners reporting for studies.
Alex Ozuma the head teacher of Owaffa primary school in Terego states that though the day began well, few pupils reported to school attributing it to the negative mindset of pupils and the change of the reporting date.
“We have opened term one with a few pupils, normally the children believe that day one they come to do work and then the change of date for beginning term one has also been confused, people are saying the date is 16th but we tried to inform them that it’s on 10th that’s why the few have come.”
Simon Droti the deputy head teacher of Oduparaka primary school revealed they enrolled 670 pupils on the first day with 271 males and 399 which he says is less than that of last year were they had over 2000 pupils on day one.
“Turn up for day one is not all that good, but we hope many will come, we are facing a challenge, the mindset of the parents who are not willing to register learners during holidays that is a very big challenge it has delayed our lessons.”
Anguyo Vincent the deputy head teacher of Manibe public reveals that the few who turned up have atleast made reasonable payments and provided the required materials that aid learning.
“About half of our learners have reported, those who have reported they have brought the requirements that we asked them to bring, actually those who have paid fees are the one who have reported but there a few cases where the parents are coming for explanation and that is also allowed.”
Taziano Alionzi the head teacher of Micu secondary school details the events of the first day of the academic year.
“The turn up though poor but the students are coming and at least about 10 teachers also came on ground, there a few who came with all the requirement that we asked but there some who explained that they will bring later and we admit them.”
