The Government of Uganda has committed itself to developing more tourism sites in the West Nile region. This announcement was made during the celebration of World Tourism Day, held at the Golf Course in Arua City.
In a message delivered by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robbinah Nabbanja, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda, urged the people of West Nile to embrace and treasure this new plan aimed at promoting tourism and boosting local development.
“I urge the people of West Nile to generously protect this treasure of the most attractive parts, tourism thrives on the experiences and we are positioning Uganda as a premier destination for sports and entertainment through tourism” the letter read.
Arua City Mayor, Wadri Sam Nyakua, warmly welcomed the initiative and appealed to the government to prioritize areas of high public interest, such as the Arua City Museum in Giligili and the development of Mt. Wati in Terego District.
“When the president was here, he pledged to build for the people of Arua modern Museum at Gili Gili, I want to request that you first track that and we as leaders in the region are going to make sure that we have 90% of tourism sites developed in West Nile,” said Wadri Sam Nyakua.
Meanwhile, the state Minister of Tourism Martin Mugara encouraged the people of West Nile to view tourism not only as a cultural and heritage activity but also as a profitable business venture with the potential to transform livelihoods.
“Everyone in this sector is making some money, so probably on average, you may be having 100 people coming to Arua , you may not notice it but they are there, how you treat them is your business, but it’s important that you give them maximum impression” said the state minister.
Among the sites that the government has pledged to develop are the Abairo Waterfall, Ombaci Massacre site, and several others across the region, signaling a new chapter in positioning West Nile as a vibrant tourism destination in Uganda.
