Security operatives in Adjumani district have launched investigation after a grenade was discovered in Tiolo cell Nyivura ward in pakelle town council. The unexploded device was discovered by Ms. Chandia Florence a resident of the same area when she had gone to check her sim-sim and maize garden today, September 04, 2025, at around 9:00am. The matter was reported to Pakele Police Station for action.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Asea Collins, the police public relation officer North West Nile, the Officer in Charge (OC) at Pakele Police Station dispatched a team to the scene where they confirmed the presence of an unexploded device which appears to be old and was found in an open area within the garden. He added that the grenade’s safety pin is secured with a rubber rope.
Asea added that the device was suspected to be placed in the garden by an unknown individual. “To ensure community safety, our bomb experts from police headquarters were on their way to Adjumani to deploy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists. They will safely remove and neutralize the device” SP Asea added.
He urges members of the public to remain calm and avoid unnecessary panic as the police are actively investigating the matter and will provide further updates as they become available.
A grenade is a small, handheld or launcher-fired explosive weapon with a main charge and a detonator that explodes after a set delay. Modern grenades contain explosive filler, a striker that triggers the detonator when the safety pin is pulled, and an arming lever that is released when thrown.
While there aren't specific public reports on the exact number of abandoned weapon cases in West Nile, Uganda, security forces have frequently recovered and seized various types of illicit arms, including those intended for trafficking from neighboring countries like the DRC and South Sudan.
The proliferation of such weapons is a known driver of insecurity in the region, with past research highlighting the extent of illicit small arms in districts like Arua, Yumbe, and Moyo, and recent operations continuing to find firearms.
