Gulu Regional Cancer Institute (UCI) has officially welcome Dr. Geriga Fadhil as the new head of the center, succeeding Dr. Amos Obote, who has led the center since its establishment in 2023.
The handover took place on Monday, September 1, 2025, in a ceremony presided over by Uganda cancer institute UCI Deputy Director, Dr. Victoria Walusansa.
During the event, Dr. Walusansa commended Dr. Amos Obote for his dedication and leadership in steering the center through its formative years. She encouraged Dr. Geriga to build on this foundation, noting that cancer care demands both passion and resilience
“You have the support of the entire UCI management to guide you where challenges arise. The journey is not easy, but step by step you will reach the goal. We are confident that you will continue the fight to strengthen this service and take it to the next level,” Dr. Walusansa remarked.
In his maiden speech, Dr. Geriga pledged to uphold UCI’s mandate in Northern Uganda and ensure that Gulu’s operations remain aligned with those of the main center in Kampala.
“This assignment comes with a full package of responsibility. Our work here is not separate from Kampala, and we must align closely with the National strategy. I will continue working with my brother, Dr. Obote, to sustain and build on the journey started two years ago,” Dr. Geriga said.
He further called for continued support from UCI management, collaboration among staff, and cooperation from the local community to advance cancer care in the region.

Reflecting on his tenure, outgoing head Dr. Obote expressed gratitude for the growth of the institute, which expanded from only nine staff members in 2023 to 70 today, offering comprehensive cancer care services—excluding radiotherapy.
“This success is not mine alone but ours as a team. I am not going anywhere, and I will continue working with Dr. Geriga to build this noble institution,” he assured.
Dr. Obote also acknowledged the unwavering support from UCI leadership in providing medicines, human resources, and other essentials during the early days of the center. However, he emphasized that it shouldn’t stop but should be extended to Dr Geriga.
From the nursing department, Dranimva Wilfred, Senior Nursing Officer, highlighted the progress made since 2023, noting that the team of nurses have grown from four to 18, now fully deployed across all functional units of the facility.
“We have registered many successes by building a strong and compassionate team to care for patients. I deeply appreciate the guidance of Dr. Obote, which laid the foundation we work on today. We also assure UCI management of our full support to Dr. Geriga,” said Dranimva.
The Gulu Regional Cancer Institute is an extension of the Uganda Cancer Institute Kampala. It was established to bring cancer care closer to communities in Northern Uganda, reduce the burden of patients traveling to Kampala, and ease congestion at the National center.
