Gwengdiya United Women football club emerged the winner in the Gulu district fourth division league. The game that was organized by Gulu district women football association DFA for the first time, was played on Sunday 18th may 2025 at Gwengdiya primary school playground in Awach subcounty, Gulu district.
The woman Member of Parliament for Gulu district Hon Sharon Laker Balmoyi appreciated all the team that turned out for the competition.
“I want to appreciate Gulu district women football association for organizing forth division league for the first time, not forgetting the team that today managed to participate, thank you for coming,” she said.
David Komagum, the head of competition urged all the players to continue with the spirit they have shown.
“Because of the good spirit you have shown today, we have identified 16 players who will play against Kitgum team on Saturday 31st May 2025 in Pece war memorial stadium as part of our preparation for the regional league,” said Komagum.
Otim Labanya, the vice chairperson Gulu women football DFA said the tournament was the first of its kind for Gulu women football association in fourth division
league.
“We were able to invite 10 women’s football clubs from the different sub-counties in Gulu district to participate in the competition but only three were able to turn up. The rest were complaining on the issue of luck of finance to pay for their transport and the team that managed to participate are the ones that shall represent Gulu district at the regional level in Kitgum,” Labanya said.
Lanbanya appreciated the fans for turning up in good number.
The team captain for Gwengdiya Women football club, Flora Jean Lamwaka expressed her excitement for having won the trophy.
“I am very happy for winning the trophy today, I also want to appreciate my fellow teammates for their efforts that resulted in to this win for tour team,” Lamwaka expressed.

Lamwaka requested well-wishers to support them because they have a lot of challenges that include finance to purchase some sporting equipment such us first aid box,
Hon. Simon Wokorach the Member of Parliament for Aswa county, Gulu district promised to give full support to all the teams going to represent Gulu district at the regional level.
“I appreciate that we are developing talents among the girls though many people think it is only boys who have the mandate to play football, little did they know that we have a lot of talents among the girls, so when we nature girls in football as Acholi it is our pride,” Hon. Wokorach emphasized.
Hon. Wokorach pledged full support to the DFA in development women football in the district.
Hon Wokorach added, “as a member of parliament who represents people of Aswa county and captain in Acholi parliamentary football team and also an athlete in the Uganda parliamentarian team, I want to pledge my full support to ensure that our team goes to Kitgum, participate and comeback with a trophy and secondly, I want to give my entire support to Gulu DFA because they are working tirelessly to develop talent among the young people.”
Among the team that participated in the competition are Gwengdiya united women football club, Som women football club and Blue Lion women football club, all the three clubs will go to Kitgum for the regional league in august this year.
