Stakeholders in Moyo District are raising concerns over the accountability and performance of the private wing at Moyo General Hospital. The discussions center on how the wing operates, particularly regarding health service delivery and the management of resources.
Abala John, the In-Charge of Lama Health Centre III in Aluru Sub-County, explained that improving accountability within the private wing will help reduce care fragmentation and unnecessary costs for both individuals and the health system. “Since its operationalization, accountability has remained a major concern in the minds of the community, if such is handled then we can be at a good side of being understood.” he said.
Anyama Charles, the Senior Town Clerk of Laropi Town Council, also expressed worry over the lack of transparency in the management of the private wing. “Locals believe that government drugs are being sold in the private wing, and patients are overcharged — yet some are vulnerable, especially single mothers and the elderly who have little support. Let the hospital management take the lead in accountability,” he urged.
However, the Hospital Administrator clarified during an interview that all resources generated from the private wing are reinvested to sustain its operations.
He emphasized that resource allocation is carried out in the presence of the medical management team to ensure transparency.
He further explained that the private wing mainly serves individuals who can afford quicker medical attention and who have consented to pay for the services.
Despite these measures, Uganda still lacks a clear national policy on the establishment and management of private wings in public hospitals, leaving their operations dependent on ad hoc arrangements and community oversight.
