Muslims will celebrate Idd -ul Fitr tomorrow, Sunday, climaxing the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
This follows the sighting of the new crescent moon on Saturday evening as recommended under the Islamic teachings. Unlike in 2024, this year, Muslims have fasted for only 29 days. Believers can fast 29 days or 30 days as per the Islamic teachings.
According to Dr Sheikh Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga, the director of sharia at Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), national prayers at Gaddafi Mosque will start at 9 am and will be led by Sheikh Ramadhan Mubajje, the mufti of Uganda.
“I would like to inform the Muslim fraternity and the wider public in Uganda that the new moon has been sighted this evening. Therefore, Idd ul-Fitr will be celebrated tomorrow, Sunday March 30, 2025,” he said.
At Kibuli Mosque, prayers will be led by Dr Hafith Walusimbi, the director of Sharia under the Kibuli parallel Muslim administration, starting at 10am.
Dr Lubanga urged believers to pray for peace and harmony in countries like DR Congo, Sudan, South Sudan and Palestine which are embroiled in endless conflicts.
“This year’s Idd has come at a time when our brothers and sisters in some countries are trapped in wars and many have died. The situation has been volatile even during Ramadan, let’s pray for them, let’s pray for peace in the whole world,” he said.
ABOUT EID EL FITR
Idd festivities begin after the sighting of a new crescent moon.
It falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month after Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. It is a time to give in charity to those in need and celebrate with family and friends the completion of a month of blessings and joy.
Idd also represents the beginning of preparations for the Hajj period which ends with Idd ul-Adha, that is approximately 70 days after Idd ul-Fitr.
After a month of fasting, Muslims are expected to break the fast on this day and enjoy the festivities with relatives, family, and friends. It is not allowed to fast during Idd.
Muslims are supposed to wake up early and perform the morning prayer (Subuh). Before going to the mosque or an open space to pray, Muslims must eat something, bathe, and put on fine clothes.
Those who had not yet paid Zakat–el–Fitr (charity) must do it before prayers to purify any indecent acts or speech they did during fasting.
