As one of the ways to increase the level of production and household income in the sub region, a team from Ker Kwaro Acholi have set foot to different chiefdoms with the aim of mobilizing the Acholi community to embrace economic farming and other productive activities that can provide better avenues of eradicating poverty in the land.
Martine Okumu the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Planning and Investment at Ker kwaro Acoli says they have identified this initiative as one of the ways they can use to engage all the people in Acholi so that they start doing productive activities that can increase their household income.
“We took it seriously as Ker kwaro Acholi to take the initiative to mobilize our people to work hard towards enhancing production and improving household income, we have already started with Lamwo District in Lukung, we were in Nwoya particularly in Alero chiefdom and our main target is to visit all the 57 chiefdoms in Acholi and give them the same message on the increase of production and any other activities that can generate income,” Okumu remarked.
Minister for Information who also doubles as the spokesperson for Ker kwaro Acholi, Mr. Okello Okuna said, it is the responsibility of each and every Acholi to desist from acts that lure them into poverty but instead, involve themselves in doing productive activities like farming, rearing of animal in the available land and as well, participating in small businesses.
Meanwhile the Acholi paramount chief Rwot David Onen Acana II encouraged the general public in Acholi to embrace farming if they are to eradicate poverty and boost their household income.
“If you go this side of Lamwo, people get good harvest of sim-sim(sesame), and if it is like that, then they can also start growing crops like bananas, coffee, cocoa, macadamia and other crops in order to bring change in our sub region and that means, other traditional leaders at clan level should mobilize people and see a way of changing the ways of how we do our farming in order to get good harvest and improve on the household income,” said Acana.
According to report from Uganda Bureau of statistic (UBOS) on Multi-dimensional poverty index, Acholi is the second poorest tribe in Uganda after Karamoja with the index standing at 63%, significantly above the national average.
