Locals in Ayivu division under Arua city have given a three weeks ultimatum for government to declare a district for the people of Ayivu.
Since the creation of Arua city in 2020 by act of parliament, the then seven sub counties in Ayivu County measuring 382 sq.km were amalgamated to form Ayivu division forcing residents to trek for distances in search for service delivery points at Ayivu division headquarters in Onduparaka.
Under their umbrella Organization the Save Ayivu Initiative the residents say after NRM secretariat granting establishment of Party structures at sub county levels, they now demand for district elections which in turn should be operationalized. Gasper Piriyo is the public relations officer Save Ayivu Initiative
“we want immediately by July 1, 2025 ( New Financial Year)a fully-fledged district for Ayivu, this means you give us staff, return our sub county chiefs, our CDOs, our production officers and other technical officers so that they start work for us,” Piriyo stated.
Responding on the current funding crisis in managing newly created administrative units by government, Piriyo argues that “all the seven sub counties in Ayivu County had their budgets and these should be returned intact.”
Meanwhile Levi Adroa the Chairman Save Ayivu Initiative is rallying the people of Ayivu not to vote again their leaders in power for the discomfort and loss of service delivery in the past five years under their rule in Arua city.
“This problem has been there because the leaders have not being listening to their people and the people have risen against them. These are the leaders we elected, they should compensate the people for the loss in service delivery otherwise no body is ready to listen to their apologies,” Adroa angrily revealed.
However, Godfrey Mbigiti Jona, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner Arua city in charge of Ayivu division admits that the president is aware of the demand of the Ayivu people and asked the people to seek for peaceful means in their quest.
“It is people’s right to demand whatever they want to demand but they should do it in a sober manner, threatening others and confronting each other over their demands we shall not allow. The good thing is the President His Excellency Yoweri Museveni Kaguta is aware of this,” Mbigiti cautioned.
Ayivu division alone has 219 cells with 49 wards served by two members of parliament in the two constituencies of East and West.
