Arsenal football club supporters were challenged to match their passion for the English Premier League club with an even greater commitment to Jesus Christ and his teachings.
Delivering his homily during a thanksgiving Mass animated by Arsenal supporters at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Gulu City on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Monsignor Ciprian Ocen P’Akech the parish priest urged believers to let the Word of God take root in their lives just as they passionately follow their Favorite football club.
Monsignor Ocen observed that many supporters can easily name Arsenal’s players but may struggle to mention the disciples of Jesus, urging Christians to prioritize their faith.

He encouraged parents to raise their children not only as loyal Arsenal fans but also as faithful Christians guided by the teachings of Christ.
Monsignor Ocen reminded the congregation that God never forces anyone to follow Him, but those who choose to live according to His Word will ultimately receive eternal reward.
Speaking after the Mass, Owor Jimmy, Chairperson of Arsenal Fans Supporters–For God Centre, welcomed the priest’s message, saying it challenged members to deepen their relationship with God while celebrating their love for football.
Jimmy said 53 Arsenal supporters participated in the thanksgiving Mass, bringing together children, youth and elderly members of the association.
He revealed that the group is organizing a major celebration on July 18, which will include a community clean-up exercise, tree planting and a procession aimed at promoting unity among supporters.
According to Jimmy, the association also seeks to use football as a platform to unite young people, encourage responsible living and strengthen community values.

He noted that although the group is made up of Arsenal supporters, its activities are open to everyone regardless of the football club they support.
The thanksgiving Mass marked the beginning of the association’s anniversary activities, during which members also prayed for Arsenal supporters who died before witnessing the club’s recent league triumph after a 22-year wait.
