Business communities in moyo district have attributed their low business transactions within their operating markets to utility challenges in the district.
Under their umbrella association Moyo Business Association (MBA), Mr. Leju Emmanuel the chairperson reported that their biggest challenge in business operation in Moyo are power and water that continues to diminish their services.
“We are facing challenges, water is not enough, it is not flowing as it used to be, on the side of electricity, it is on and off, you are forced to run a generator but when you run a generator there is no business sense there because not being able to make money, you are just sustaining customers,” Mr. Leju reported.
Mr. Oocho Christopher the area manager for National Water and Sewage Cooperation reveals that their challenge has been power to pump water from the main source.
“Power has been our challenge and we are force to run a generator and the generator you cannot run for twenty four hours the maximum you can run it is sixteen hours and during dry season the demand in Moyo is high so we have to be very careful so those challenges are there in this three months of dry season but when we enter into rain season there will be enough water.” Mr. Oocho said
He also added that they are working on building of another and have already drilled the well.
In response Mr. Abita Charles, the area manager for UEDCL Moyo says they are working on alternative source of power from Muni in Arua.
“The strategy we doing right now is to have alternative source in the next one or two weeks from Muni in Arua, we have met about 80% of the preparations. And when we get that one, our power supply will increase to 99%. What I cannot grant now is reliability because reliability is different from availability,” Mr. Abita answered.
Hon. Anyama Williams the district chairperson acknowledged the efforts of the two service providers but called for faster and long lasting solutions.
“Before the end of last year, there is bit of progress in improvements in power supply, when you are comparing from the past. National water should also improve because over the last three years there are a lot of inconsistences.” Hon. Anyama appealed.
Since connection of the district to the national grid, the on and off power remained unsolved challenging most business and homesteads who largely depend on power.
