As Moyo district joined the rest of the World in commemorating the world breast feeding week, celebrated every year from August 1 to 7, health experts are calling on mothers to exclusively breastfeed their newborns for at least six months before introducing them to solid food.
Dr Adrawa Michael the assistant health officer of Moyo, who is also the in charge of maternal child health, explains why breast feeding should be promoted and celebrated as a whole
“Breastfeeding needs to be protected and promoted because breast milk is the ultimate best option, it is the readily available source so as a district we also joined to celebrate because we want to support these mothers who are breast feeding, most times some of them are workers maybe in organizations and you find sometimes they face difficulties in breast feeding their babies since they are restricted at work,” said Adrawa.
Sr. Mulu Dominica a midwife at Moyo general hospital disclosed that breast feeding is necessary for all mothers. “Breast feeding is something that is very necessary for our young babies and we advocate that all mothers unless on health grounds, that you are not supposed to breast feed. We are supposed to breast feed our babies because our breast milk contains all the food values and it gives all the food nutrients demanded by these babies for growth and development but also gives bonding time,” Mulu Disclosed
Meanwhile Letaru Gladys a breast feeding mother explains the importance of timely breast feeding, “Breast feeding is very important especially in the first six months I did exclusive breast feeding up to six months, if the child is breast fed properly the child won’t fall sick, even if you introduce other types of foods after six months I still make sure that my child breast feeds timely,” Letaru narrated.
Lagu William the district nutrition focal person Moyo general hospital echoed that it is a collective responsibility to embrace the breast feeding.
“This breast feeding week calls for collective effort for everyone, let us play our role as community so that together we can promote breast feeding and ensure that we give every child a health start in life,” Lagu Emphasized.
Exclusive breast feeding means giving a baby only breast milk for the first six months of life, with no other foods, liquids, or water.
Globally health organizations like World Health Organization recommend this practice because breast milk provides complete nutrition, vital for disease fighting.
