In a heated parliamentary session today, Hon. Alioni York Odria, MP for Aringa South Constituency, delivered a fervent critique of Speaker Anita Among and the parliamentary leadership regarding corruption allegations. His comments reflect growing tensions and frustration within the Ugandan Parliament over the issue of corruption.

In his address, Hon. Odria expressed gratitude to the Speaker for recalling the house from recess, but his focus quickly shifted to a more contentious matter. He highlighted the ongoing struggle to gather signatures for a debate on a matter of national importance, asserting that the process has been met with challenges.

"I want to thank God that from zero, we went up to 172 signatures, but we are still left with five," Odria said. He underscored the urgency of the situation, questioning why the Speaker, whom they had elected to chair the house impartially, has not addressed the corruption concerns raised by President Yoweri Museveni in his recent State of the Nation address.

Odria accused the Speaker of failing to defend the integrity of the Parliament, which has been tainted by corruption allegations. "The President painted us clearly in Kololo during the state of the nation address. I used to hear, but now I have confirmed with evidence that there is corruption in the Parliament of Uganda and the Ministry of Finance," Odria asserted.

He demanded answers from Speaker Anita Among regarding the delay in debating the issue of corruption. According to Odria, despite previous requests for space on the order paper to discuss corruption, there has been no progress. "It is two months down the road, and the world is aware that there is corruption in this Parliament. We want this matter to be debated. Why are you running away from debating this matter?"

Odria’s comments reflect a broader frustration among some MPs about the handling of corruption allegations. He emphasized the need for a transparent and open discussion on the issue. "You need to come out clean, Rt. Hon. Speaker. Your name has been mentioned for being corrupt, and we have a motion to debate the matter of commissioners. We have evidence and want to lay it out and have them defend themselves."

The MP also criticized the leadership for obstructing the debate and urged for a cleaner image of the Parliament. He expressed concern about the current state of the country, stating, "today this country is under panic; the army has been deployed massively because of this issue of corruption. Why don’t you let Ugandans free from corruption?"

Odria’s remarks underscore a deepening crisis within the Ugandan Parliament, reflecting the growing demand for accountability and reform. The call for an open debate on corruption allegations is indicative of the broader struggle for transparency and integrity within the legislative body.

The President's earlier confirmation of corruption within Parliament has clearly intensified scrutiny and criticism of parliamentary leaders. This session highlights the urgent need for decisive action and reform to address these issues and restore public confidence in Uganda’s governance institutions.

Public Reaction and Future Steps
The public reaction to Odria’s comments is likely to be mixed, with some supporting his call for transparency while others may view the exchange as a symptom of deeper institutional challenges. The ongoing debate and scrutiny will be critical in determining the future course of action for Parliament and its leadership.

Hon. Alioni York Odria’s comments today signal a pivotal moment in Uganda’s political landscape. The call for an open and honest debate on corruption reflects broader demands for integrity and accountability within Parliament.

As the nation watches closely, the responses from Speaker Anita Among and other leaders will be crucial in shaping the path forward for Uganda’s legislative and governance practices.
