MTN Uganda has extended its nationwide Y’ello Storm campaign to Northern Uganda, combining customer engagement activities with a donation of essential supplies to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital as the telecommunications company deepens its commitment to communities beyond connectivity services.
As part of the campaign, the company donated 25 mattresses and mosquito nets to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital to support patients in the maternity and casualty wards. The hospital serves as a major referral centre for communities across the Acholi sub-region, neighbouring districts, and patients from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, and Kenya.
The donation forms part of MTN Uganda’s broader corporate social responsibility efforts through the MTN Foundation, which focuses on improving healthcare and education across the country.
The initiative also coincides with the expansion of the Y’ello Storm campaign, a customer engagement programme under MTN’s Free Your Fire brand platform that has already reached Arua, Masaka, Soroti, and Mubende. The campaign brings MTN services closer to customers through direct engagements, customer support, digital demonstrations, and community outreach.
MTN Uganda: Giving Back Through the MTN Foundation
Speaking during the handover ceremony, MTN Uganda’s Regional Business Manager for Northern Uganda, Philip Odoi, said the company’s investment in communities is made possible through the support of its customers.
“The revenue we earn when customers purchase airtime, data bundles and use services like MTN Kabode helps finance the MTN Foundation. Through the Foundation, we support communities in health and education, which are our two priority sectors. Today, we are donating 25 mattresses together with mosquito nets because we believe this will help address some of the immediate needs at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.”
Odoi said the Y’ello Storm campaign is about more than promoting MTN’s products and services. “Y’ello Storm is about creating meaningful connections with our customers and communities. It is not only about showcasing our products and services, but also understanding what matters most to the people we serve.”
He added that supporting Gulu Regional Referral Hospital demonstrates MTN’s commitment to creating a positive impact wherever it operates. “Today, our focus is Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, an institution that provides critical healthcare services to thousands of people across Northern Uganda. Supporting this facility is part of our commitment to ensuring that our presence creates a positive impact beyond connectivity.”
Odoi noted that MTN Uganda remains committed to expanding digital access while investing in communities. “Connectivity is about more than networks. It is about connecting people to opportunities, services, and solutions that improve their lives.”
Hospital Appreciates MTN Uganda’s Support

Walter Uriek-Wun, the Principal Assistant Secretary at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital speaking
Receiving the donation, Walter Uriek-Wun, the Principal Assistant Secretary at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, thanked MTN Uganda for complementing government efforts in improving healthcare delivery.
“I want to thank MTN Uganda for the love and care you have shown the people of Uganda, especially our patients. We also appreciate you for supplementing government efforts in ensuring that patients receive better care, comfort, and hope while they are admitted at the hospital.”
Uriek-Wun noted that Gulu Regional Referral Hospital serves a large population from Northern Uganda and neighbouring countries, making partnerships with the private sector critical.
“Gulu Regional Referral Hospital receives patients from across Northern Uganda, including mothers seeking maternity care and emergency cases requiring immediate attention. Improving the environment where patients receive care contributes to better outcomes and preserves the dignity of those we serve. We appreciate MTN Uganda for recognising the important role this hospital plays in the region.”
Hospital Management Says Donation Will Improve Patient Care
Representing the Senior Executive Consultant, Dr. Morish Ojara, Deputy Director of Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, described the donation as timely and valuable. “This gesture of donating 25 mattresses to our maternity ward, together with mosquito nets, will go a long way in strengthening our healthcare system. It gives us the support we need to continue providing quality healthcare services to our patients.”
He said the donation reflects MTN Uganda’s commitment to improving community wellbeing. “This demonstrates that MTN Uganda is not just a private company but a responsible corporate citizen committed to improving the wellbeing and health of our communities. We pledge that all the support you have given us will be put to good use as we continue serving the people of the Acholi sub-region and beyond.”
Supporting One of Northern Uganda’s Busiest Referral Hospitals
Gulu Regional Referral Hospital is one of Northern Uganda’s most important healthcare facilities. It handles thousands of expectant mothers every year and conducts more than 500 deliveries every month, making it a critical referral centre for the region.
The hospital also provides emergency care, including treatment for victims of road traffic accidents, with daily admissions placing increasing pressure on its infrastructure and available resources.

Beyond the hospital donation, MTN Uganda used the Gulu leg of the Y’ello Storm campaign to engage customers through Telco and MoMo Clinics, where residents accessed customer support, digital and financial literacy training, healthcare services through a community health camp, and assistance with mobile devices.
The company is also commissioning a new network site in Layibi III, aimed at improving network coverage and connectivity across the region.
Customer engagement activities will continue in Paicho and Awach before the Gulu campaign concludes with a community celebration featuring customer rewards, product demonstrations, and entertainment.
Strengthening Communities beyond Connectivity
MTN Uganda says the Y’ello Storm campaign reflects its broader ambition to ensure more Ugandans benefit from digital services, financial inclusion, and opportunities created by technology.
By combining customer engagement with community investment, the company continues to demonstrate that its role extends beyond telecommunications to supporting health, education, and socio-economic development across Uganda.
