DAILY MONITOR
The government has suspended the Nile Star Bus Company from transport services for 30 days following a road crash along the Arua-Karuma highway that left seven people dead and 13 injured on Tuesday night.
State Minister for Works and Transport, Mr Fred Byamukama, made the pronouncement on Wednesday, noting that the suspension starts on Wednesday at 6pm and will last 30 days.
‘’We can`t allow this. You see the trend in one year, from May 2025 to May 2026, they have caused the death of 11 people and left 91 others nursing injuries; we can’t allow this, and that is why we have decided to go by that.’’ The Minister said.
The Minister said the company has also been tasked to compensate the families who lost their dear ones in road crashes involving their buses in the past year, noting that those were the result of their indisciplined drivers.
Buses belonging to Nile Star Bus Company have reportedly been involved in 11 crashes during the same period.
The Minister disclosed that the 64-year-old driver who was driving the bus that on Monday night left seven people dead and 13 injured after a collision with a truck in Purongo Town Council, Nwoya district, had been dismissed by YY Coaches for drinking alcohol.
‘’The driver of Nile Star, who was driving, this man is 64 years old, like he told you, remaining with just one and a half years to end his career driving buses, he was chased from YY on allegations of overdrinking and causing accidents.’’
Adding that; ‘’And this same driver, the passengers noticed earlier that he was under the influence of intoxicant, the passengers noticed so, they tried to stop him, but he couldn’t listen. This driver is called Mandela Kasimu.’’ The Minister explained.
The Minister recommended that the licenses of drivers implicated in such vices should be permanently revoked.
The bus belonging to Nile Star, registration number UBP 736U, reportedly driven by Mandela Kasimu on Monday night, collided with a truck registration number SSD 498C transporting fish from South Sudan to DR Congo, leaving seven people dead and 13 injured.
Survivors say the driver was severely cautioned against speeding before the crash, but he snubbed them.
Nile Star buses normally ply between Kampala and the West Nile sub-region.
