Amidst the ongoing country wide industrial action staged by UNATU, humanity teachers under their umbrella body the Uganda Professional Humanity Teachers’ Union UPHTU are on with their routine following a declaration by the body not to participate in the called industrial action.
A notice issued by UPHTU General Secretary Francis Mutesasira on Monday confirmed that the union is not part of the industrial action by Uganda national teachers union a head of the school reopening for term three, warning its members against participating in it.
A visit by Radio Pacis to some secondary schools in Arua city indicated that teaching and learning was going on normally.
At Arua secondary school, about 530 learners and 23 teachers both humanity and sciences turned up on the second day. Rashid Anguzu the head teacher of the school wondered if the industrial action is for all given the splits in UNATU.
“But we are aware that recently UNATU broke into branches Uganda professional science teachers association then Uganda professional humanity teachers association so it’s like this two association are saying its UNATU’s industrial action what now disturbs is that who are the remaining members of UNATU are they only the primary teachers or there are some members in the secondary school ’”.Anguzu lamented.
While at Arua Public Secondary school no sign of industrial action was observed as learners and teachers commenced business on the first day with records that indicated every teacher regardless of their unions of affiliation present on the TELA machine.
Government sat with the leaders of UPHTU on September 10 and 11 of this year, made commitment to enhance the salaries of humanity teachers across the country.
Topista Akello the president of Uganda Professional Humanity Teachers’ Union said there’s no need for them to take part in the industrial action by UNATU.
“There’s no need for us to participate in the strike because our negotiations are still ongoing and we pray and believe that by God’s grace let the negotiations bear fruit’”.
