The structural election which were supposed to be held early in July this year were suspended after the delegates demanded for Ayivu and Central divisions to be treated as independent districts.
The demand caused misunderstanding among the delegates prompting the NRM electoral commission to halt the elections without further notice.
NRM Registrar in Arua city Tom Amagu says members have been calling for the elections to be carried out this week but his office has not yet received any update from the National secretariat to hold the elections. “As I talk now there is no information in the secretariat that there is going to be election in Arua city, official communication has not yet been made and the date for the elections has not been set yet,” said Amagu.
Hajj Musa Anguyo a contestant for the positon of the chairperson says that the delay is a great loss for the party. ”the time we are wasting for having the election in place should have been used for mobilization. You see these kinds of confusions, it is a very big loss for us the NRM,” Hajji Musa Anguyo lamented.
John Tutu another contestant confirms his patience and commitment any time the election is organized. “Me as a person am just waiting for that date, when it comes I will just offer myself then elections take place that one doesn’t take time. There are regulations that guide that, if the electorate want me to be the chairperson well and good, if they don’t. It should not be a do or die,” Tutu revealed.
However Richard Todwong the NRM party secretary general revealed plans to resolve the matter over the weekend on Saturday when addressing members of the party during the planning meeting for the Friday October 17, Museveni’s campaign rallies in Arua.
“Initially when we had a meeting in Kampala with the two teams, it was agreed that the party would grant political district status to both of them, we invite both divisions at status of district. And they do activity as separate districts under NRM. We are still doing further consultations but the party is aware, it will be resolved,” Todwong assured.
According to the party officials, the elections will be held before the NRM presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta’s campaign rally in Arua that is scheduled for Friday October 17, 2025.
