Arua city.
The National Unity Platform, the main opposition political party in the country has warned that, it will kick out aspirants who will run as independent candidates in the 2026 general elections after failing to get the party’s endorsement to hold their flag.
The party organized closed door meetings in an attempt to resolve the fallout with aspirants who were not endorse to carry their flag in the general elections, but, it’s believed some aggrieved party members are disgruntled over the manner in which their issues are handled.
Abdulhanan Ramadan, the administrator for National Unity Platform in West Nile region affirms that, their stand on the matter is strong and will adhere to their principles,
“There are those who still insist they just want that post. We are not that worried because NUP is a big party. Before coming, NUP was there, and you are leaving NUP there,” he assured those threatening to leave.
Twaha Mambo, a supporter of the party in Arua city supports the decision of their leadership and vows that, they will not back up those who will contest as independent candidates,
“With What I have seen in our party from the onset of the party up to now, there is nothing that can worry me. So, because of that we cannot change our hearts. We shall not follow those who move out of the party. We need change but not money,” Twaha said.
Similarly, Daniel Apamaku, a resident of Arua city believes that, it’s important for the members of the party to always adhere to the guiding principles of the party instead of taking their own direction to fulfill their own interests,
“By joining the political party, you have subscribed to the dos and don’ts of the party. Before you register yourself as a member of NUP, you are supposed to read the party’s constitution. These people complaining may not serve the interest of the party or the voters”, Apamaku said.
According to the leadership of the party, the aspirants who are not endorsed by the party to have its flag are free to run as independents, but their membership will be revoked and hence leaving the party permanently.
