The three students of St Joseph’s College Ombaci arrested last week during the Arua city netball and athletics competition in Barifa have been released by the Police of Arua city central police station after been detained over hooliganism and violent behavior.
Hooliganism and violent behaviors has always been rampant among the students during the co-curricular activities such as athletics and football in West Nile region.
SP Ignatius Dragudu, the Regional Community Liaison Officer for West Nile explains the circumstances under which the three students were released by the police.
“Those three students of St Joseph’s college Ombaci were arrested during the ball games competition for Arua city in Barifa, when they were brought to Arua central police station they spent one night and later their parents were called to come to meet with the officer in charge of the station and they were warned and cautioned never to involve themselves in violent behaviors again,” he said.
Dragudu, further condemns hooliganism and violent behavior of students during co-curricular activities urging school administrators in the region to find ways of managing the violent behavior of students during co-curricular activities in order to keep sanity in the region.
“As a student you are not supposed to follow the rules and regulations put in place and involvement in unwanted behaviors that’s why we were able to warn the students with their parents so I think by now they should be in classes attending lessons,” he added.
The burden of restoring the properties damaged by students during strikes is usually placed on the shoulders of their parents and the school administration.
The challenge is on all the stakeholders in the education sector to make deliberate efforts to address the issue of hooliganism and violent behavior of students.
