Members of the public have welcomed the electoral reforms proposed by the former Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga which seek to reduce the size of Parliament from 529 MP’s to 342 MP’s.
Mpuuga proposes to reduce the size of Parliament by having one directly elected member from each district, irrespective of gender.
This would result in 146 MPs plus an equal number of women representatives elected through proportional representation, ensuring that political party representation in Parliament mirrors their vote share.
Hon Bernard Atiku the former Member of Parliament for greater Ayivu constituency welcomes the proposal saying that it will improve the quality of leaders sent to Parliament.
“I personally welcomes the proposal, I think his proposal is good it will bring the best out of those districts, people will vote for the best brains to represent them in parliament instead of what is happening these days where people clamber to go to parliament without any leadership qualities which has been caused by the big size of the current parliament,” Atiku remarked.
Francis Adepo the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) National Youth Chairman urges Ugandans to support the electoral reforms proposed by Mathias Mpuuga which will save money from the country.
“We can join hands to push this electoral reforms together so that the size of parliament should be reduced, Resident district commissioners should be scrapped off and the size of cabinet should be reduced so that we have a minimum center of decision making that matches with the economic status of Uganda even up to now some members of parliament have never spoken in parliament how relevant is such kind of members of parliament for the country,”
Moses Oringi the programs manager of West Nile Civil Society Network welcomes the proposal and says that the proposal is in line with their recently conducted citizen consultation on electoral reforms.
“Recently contacted citizen consultation on electoral reforms as civil society network seeking to reduce the size of parliament we came up with civil society network position paper on electoral reforms and one of issue was to reduced the size of parliament having one directly elected member of parliament and one female member of parliament per district so we are looking at cutting the number of members of parliament from 529 to 342, what is that 342 members of parliament can not do that 529 members of parliament can do”
Mathias Mpuuga laid out a significant electoral reform proposal to address key constitutional concerns and promote a free and fair electoral process. His proposal touches on three major areas constitutional amendment, legislative reforms, and improving governance structures.
