The locals in Moyo district have raised concerns that dust from the ongoing road construction is affecting road users and traders operating along the road. Those with computers and other electronic devices are particularly impacted.
Adebasiku Justine Guma, the community liaison officer for the Moyo site under Zhong-Mei, highlighted some of the challenges faced by the company that have led to delays in the construction process.
"On the Moyo side, we started construction late due to documentation issues. I believe we began from kilometer 93 to 103. We have since continued with bush clearing, grubbing, and leveling the roadbed. However, we have faced challenges from the start, particularly with quarrying. Communities have been disputing land ownership, which has slowed our progress. Additionally, we have encountered delays from the district in processing essential documents, which has hindered our work. Before acquiring these documents, we needed to submit a report to NEMA for approval and to obtain a mining certificate. This process took us nearly a year, but fortunately, we have now found a solution. As I speak, we are only waiting for the NEMA certificate for mining, after which we can begin work at the quarry site," said Adebasiku.
Meanwhile, Mawadri Moses from Toloro village expressed concerns over the slow pace of construction and the impact of dust on pedestrians. "The biggest issue with this road is the dust, which severely affects us when walking. Additionally, the constructors are working too slowly, and the road itself has potholes. I urge them to speed up the construction process," said Mawadri.
On the other hand, Idraku Robert, a businessman operating along the Moyo-Yumbe road, appealed to the constructors to spray water on the road to minimize the dust, which is damaging their electronic devices such as printers and computers.
"The major challenge we face on this road is the dust. When the heavy vehicles and graders operate, the dust rising affects our computers and printers. I appeal to the constructors to at least spray water on the road while working to reduce the dust and protect our equipment," emphasized Idraku.
