The city Electoral Commission is preparing for special interest group elections after concluding the nomination exercise for city divisions which took place on the 24 and 25 of July 2025.
The returning officer of Arua city Osman Ezale says whereas most of the positions were unopposed there those that are contested in Ayivu division.
“For central, all these people have gone unopposed and they are all on NRM ticket as Ayivu division we have nominated for the youth all the signed positions and for older persons there are also going to elections because there an independent persons for vice who is going to contested against the NRM we shall have election for older persons so these candidates have to prepared.”
According to the electoral commission only individuals that are elected at parish level are eligible to vote by physically lining up behind their candidates, their representative or their portrait.
In the position of the elder’s vice chairperson they are two contestants one under the NRM ticket while the opponent is an independent candidate.
Marino Acia the contestant under the NRM ticket under the position of vice chairperson says the campaigns are moving on amidst challenges. “Campaigns are not as intense as for the other positions we have five selected members of the elders committee, sub county and it is those members who will participate in the elections, the challenge is communication at times you get the information for going for voting in the morning when your least prepared for the exercise and then for some is the transport you know elders are elders, many do not have the means for transport they need some facilitation but where to get it is the challenge.” he noted.
Brain Asindu NRM leaning contestant for the position of youth chairperson encourages the young people to actively participate in the election. “the youths should wake up they should come and make decisions because the future belongs to us the biggest percentage being youths, I think it is the right time, we wake up and come make decisions,” he appealed.
According to the electoral commission, the process will continue up to August, ending with the National Youth Council elections and the selection of regional delegates for national councils.
