Primary schools implementing special needs education in Arua have recorded progress in last year’s Primary Leaving Examinations results.
Arua demonstration primary school one of the schools implementing special needs program registered 2 pupils with visual impairment and both of them past in second division.
The deputy head teacher of the school Asea Joseph, says pupils excelled in social studies than in other subjects, despite challenges of inadequate text books.
“Being blind learners they have really tried their best we have seen that English language has been a problem to them and this has been mainly attributed to challenges of lack of text books in braille, these learner depend entirely on the notes that are given to them by the teacher during lessons reading material for brail are not there.”
Patrick Awia Paddy the deputy of Ediofe girl’s primary schools says they had 2 impaired pupils who got second grade.
“We had two special needs candidates one visual impaired got 22 and one hearing impaired got aggregate 24 so I see here the results are not so bad.”
Eruba primary school registered four learners with hearing impairment 0ne boy and three girls and got two in division two compared to last year where all the special needs learners were ungraded.
Benson Edroma Adima the head teacher of Eruba primary school says it is a great improvement calling for more teachers in the field of special needs.
“It has been great improvement as compared to 2023, in sense that these learners were able to get second grade one boy got second grade 24 aggregate and one girl also got third grade while the two were in division U, our main challenge here is teachers who are to handle these learners the number is very very low, teachers teach them with the ordinary leaners.”
According to Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), a total of 3,328 learners with various special needs, including those who are blind, deaf, physically handicapped, and dyslexic registered for the exams.
Where 181 candidates were in Division One, 1,712 in Division Two, 637 Division Three, and 371 Division Four, while 388 were ungraded.
