The Refugee Welfare Council (RWC) III Chairperson of Zone One in Bidibidi Settlement, Yumbe District, has urged refugee students to refrain from participating in political activities in Uganda.
Maleah Muka Otim, the Refugee Welfare Council III Chairperson for Zone One, emphasized that it is risky for South Sudanese students to get involved in political matters in Uganda, as they are foreigners.
“Right now, the people of Uganda are engaging in electoral activities, starting with the NRM primary elections. As refugees, we need to stay out of this—it is not meant for us,” advised Otim.
He added that some South Sudanese individuals who possess national IDs might attempt to participate in voting. He warned that such actions are dangerous and would be difficult to justify or defend as refugee leaders.
Meanwhile, Umba Peter, the Head of Field Office at CECI Bidibidi in Yumbe District, also advised students to concentrate on their education and stay informed about the current situation.
“The current challenges we’re facing as refugees—and even some host communities—stem from recent reductions in food rations, partly due to funding cuts by the U.S. administration,” Peter explained.
He encouraged refugee students to focus on their studies and avoid engaging in Uganda’s politics.
