Over 200 students from Metu and Moyo secondary schools did agriculture and geography field work tour at Abi Zonal Agricultural Research And Development Institute in Arua city, geared towards studying the factors for the growth and development of Abi Zardi with the purpose of preparing the students for the fourth coming Mock and UNEB Examinations and also for future references.
Mandre Joseph a Geography teacher in Metu senior secondary school explained the purpose of the field work saying, “We brought students from senior six and four who offer Agriculture and Geography for field work because we are trying to exercise our theoretical activities that we learn in the class rooms to the practical aspects in the field, based on this new curriculum to equip them with the knowledge so that the 25% is solidly consumed by the students.”
Nafuna Lucy an Agriculture teacher from Moyo senior secondary stretches on the skills obtained by learners during field work. “In class, we learn theoretical part that means when we take our learners to Abi farm you find that they get more knowledge and skills on how to carry out agronomic practices like on how to handle animals and in crop sections,” explained Nafuna.
Meanwhile Ambayo Emmanuel a senior six candidate in Metu senior secondary school noted the importance of the field work to him as a student. “The field work has helped me to find and identify the types of fish reared at Abi farm fish pond and as well it helped me to apply the knowledge we learn from class in to field work,” said Ambayo.
However Amza Asizo from National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) based at Abi Zardi natural resources had this piece of advice to the learners, “my aspect in terms of advice to them is once knowledge is acquired, it shouldn’t be only for academia you only do it because you want to pass and that’s the end, having good grades means you must have a transformed mind, transformed mind means you put what you have learned in to practice this practical will help enable you develop as a person, develops your family, your community and the whole country, this is the kind of a student we expect, to be that who are hard on practical oriented and who love what they are doing” emphasized Asizo.
Abi farm is a government farm institute for West Nile region that aims at improving student’s capacity on answering research questions.
