The leaders of Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) in West Nile sub-region have committed to maintain peace in the country. This message was contained in the communication of 409 Brigade Commander, Lt. Col. Nathan Bainomugisha during the celebration of 43rd Tareh-Sita anniversary in Arua City.
While speaking at the event organized at military barracks in Arua City, Bainomugisha said, the force remains committed to ensuring that peace in the country is maintained. “Our forces therefore pledge more vigilance to ensure no negative forces can disrupt our forces, our people’s peace, stability and development” the Commander assured.
Tarehe Sita, which translates to 6th day in Swahili, is a historic day on which the National Resistance Army (NRA) headed by current President and Commander in Chief of the armed forces, Gen. Yoweri Museveni launched a rebellion on 6th February 1981. This led to takeover of the capital, Kampala by the NRA, now known as UPDF, bringing to an end years of civil unrest in the country.
Arua Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Okiswa however calls for corporation from civilians as the force has now moved to collaborate with them in a move to maintain peace. “That is a fundamental change… our future must now remain secured, what we only need is your total corporation and we don’t take anything for granted and that the civilians now must know this is people’s army” the RDC emphasized.
Meanwhile, Ayivu Division Mayor, Malon Avutia commends the UPDF for working together with locals in which he says is making it easy to address insecurity cases.
The National Celebration of 43rd Tarehe Sita anniversary was held in Buyende District under the theme: “Celebrating People’s Struggle for Unity, Security and Peace for Socio-Economic Transformation”.
