Residents of Katrini Sub County in Terego District are celebrating as the long-awaited upgrade of Itia Health Center II to a Health Center III finally kicks off.
The project, which includes the construction of a modern maternity ward, is set to bring much-needed maternal healthcare services closer to the community.
For years, expectant mothers in the area have faced significant challenges in accessing healthcare services, particularly during labor.
Many have had to travel long distances to nearby health facilities, often under difficult circumstances. However, with the commencement of this upgrade, the health center is poised to become a vital lifeline for the community.
According to Adnan Dramadri, the site engineer overseeing the project, the initial phase will focus on completing the slab within a month.
The facility will boast a range of amenities, including a waiting area, reception, and treatment rooms, once complete.
The project has already generated employment opportunities for 19 local residents, who are working on various aspects of the construction.
Henry Wadribo, chairperson of the health unit management committee, expressed gratitude for the government's allocation of funds, highlighting the pressing need for improved healthcare infrastructure in the area.
Rophine Afimani, a local resident, welcomed the upgrade, noting that it would significantly improve services for expectant mothers. "Our midwife was transferred due to lack of a maternity ward, and women have been suffering," Afimani said.
One expectant mother, Likico, expressed relief that the project has begun but emphasized the need for its timely completion. "We receive antenatal and postnatal services here, but labor services are a challenge, especially at night," Likico said.
The upgrade of Itia Health Center II to a Health Center III is a vital step towards enhancing maternal healthcare services in the region. The local community eagerly awaits the successful completion of this project, which promises to bring life-saving services closer to home.
