The independent Electoral Commission in Arua city has successfully concluded the nomination for Local Governments with two of the candidates for the Division Mayoral race nominated partially pending verification of the signatures of their supporters.
The nomination process for lower local governments that commenced on Monday September 8, 2025, saw over 200 candidates nominated as councilors for both Ayivu and central divisions with 7 candidates running for central division Mayoral seat and 2 fully nominated while another 2 candidates were partially nominated for Ayivu division.
The concluded nomination of candidates follows a struggle by the candidates to fulfill the legal demand of the Electoral Commission to support their candidature with 20 signatures from each ward within their electoral area.
Jimmy Candia, commonly known as TIG who is running for Ayivu division Mayorship vowed to work in close collaboration with the people of Ayivu.
“We are going to work together with you people. I want to say two things, one is, consultative leadership, secondly effective leadership and effective service delivery to the land of Ayivu people,” Candia Said.
Equally, Malon Avutia, the incumbent Ayivu division Mayor pledged to unite the people of the city, given its cosmopolitan nature.
“We want to advocate for peace and coexistence but also inclusivity. We have about 25,000 refugees and urban migrants living in this city. Really, to be a mayor here, you must be somebody who can unite people,” Avutia said.
Meanwhile, Ronald Dradria, who by press time was partially nominated with his competitor Guma Jimmy, is hopeful that, his nomination will be successful to offer a leadership of difference to Ayivu.
“I was able to beat the time given that I was here on time. However, the delay of the system could easily be my challenge and I believe I will be able to be nominated. Am not here to do different things, but, am here to do things differently,” Dradria said in an interview.
But, Osman Ezale, the Arua city Electoral Commission Returning Officer urged the candidates to patiently wait for the campaign programs without violation of the Electoral Commission guidelines by commencing campaigns.
“Nomination has ended today for local government in Arua city. However, campaign has not started. Campaign is a gazzetted time and this is done by the Electoral Commission. So, people should not go and campaign. If you are caught campaigning, it is illegal and you will face the law’” Ezale said.
