Police in Obongi District have detained two of their colleagues on allegations of aiding the escape of suspects from custody.
The yet to be named officers are attached to Obongi Central Police Station.
The suspects who escaped are; Juma Rasual who is accused of attempted rape and Ibrahim Wongita accused of rape.
SP Collins Asea the police spokesperson for North West Nile region said, the escape occurred while the suspects were being transported for a short call at around 6:50 am
“When these people were in the latrine for a natural call, the suspects managed to open their handcuffs. During this time, two officers were on duty and, as a result, they have been charged alongside the suspects,” he said.
As the investigation continue into the matter, police have urged the local community to assist them by reporting any information related to the whereabouts of the escapees to the nearest police station.
Wongita, a 21-year-old businessman and resident of Mundu cell, Obongi town council in Obongi District allegedly raped a 16-year-old pupil on March 21, 2026 at around 3am when she was returning from a night club.

In January 2026, three police officers-AIP Godfrey Kali, Cpl Peter Owiny and Cpl Oscar Odul attached to Busia customs office were remanded for aiding the escape of Najib Kasule, a key suspect in a gold scam involving over USD 840,000.The officers were accused of abusing their authority at the Uganda-Kenya border.
Similarly, in November 2025 Police Constable Naboth Erou attached to Rubanda Police Station was arrested after allegedly allowing seven suspects to escape from cells.
According to police, the escape occurred when the officer opened the cells for one suspect to speak with a relative, at which point another suspect forced his way out.
In 2025,two officers; Ruth Nayisikwe and Enock Kirabira attached Bugiri Central Police Station were arrested for allowing a 53-year-old defilement suspect, Joseph Ngobi Ndodhi, to walk out of cells at the station.
In July 2025, officers Rose Adong and Detective Sylvia Kayaga attached to Hoima Police Station were investigated for aiding the escape of Kerett Byonabye,who was accused of defiling a 13-year-old girl.
In 2025, three police officers attached to Luweero Central Police Station were detained after four suspects, including two for defilement and two for burglary, escaped. Padlocks were found discarded, indicating probable assistance from within.
Meanwhile in Masindi District in 2025, Detective Eric Wabwiire was arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of 350,000 Ugandan shillings to aid the escape of five rape suspects.
And in Zombo District, the District Police Commander and CID were implicated in 2021 in connection to the disappearance of a suspect wanted for robbery and association with a DR Congo-based rebel group.
The Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report released in February 2025, indicate that a total of 1,667 cases of rape were reported to the police in 2024, compared to 1,577 cases in 2023, representing a 5.7 per cent increase in reported rape cases.
Out of this 690 cases of rape were taken to court, with 594 suspects charged and awaiting trial.
