Two police officers in Arua City have been arrested and charged with the theft of a firearm and neglect of duty, raising fresh concerns about discipline and professionalism within the Uganda Police Force.
The suspects, Inspector of Police Dewoilt Bismass and Police Constable Onjeru Godfrey, both attached to Odramacaku Police Station, were apprehended on allegations of stealing a gun loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. Following their arrest yesterday, the two officers were immediately arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Arua City Hall, where they were remanded to Arua Government Prisons, and awaiting trial at the High Court of Arua.
Superintendent of Police Anguyo Jimmy Baiga, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrests and emphasized that the duo will face justice for their actions.
He stressed that misconduct among law enforcement officers undermines public trust and the very purpose of policing. ″On 1st October 2025 that the two police men were charged with a crime of theft of gun with 30 rounds of ammunition and neglect of duty. They were remanded and they will appear before the high court for their matter to be mentioned″ said ASP Jimmy.
ASP Anguyo further appealed to all police officers across the region to uphold integrity and serve as role models to the communities they protect, reminding them that discipline and professionalism are the cornerstones of policing. ″We sound warning to police officers that, loss of a gun is very criminal and we as police, we shall not joke with that case especially this moment of elections and we also believe this very gun that was stolen should be the one even terrorizing the city″ Anguyo warned.
Cases of misconduct in the Uganda Police Force remain a concern.
According to the Police Annual Crime Report of 2024, over 220 officers nationwide were disciplined for offenses ranging from abuse of office, corruption, negligence, and misuse of firearms.
