The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has said consultations with relevant government agencies are still underway over the closure of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda outlets, urging patience as efforts continue to resolve the matter.
In a letter dated July 2, 2026, addressed to the Chairperson of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), Dr. Innocent Nahabwe, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo acknowledged receipt of NAB’s request for engagement regarding the shutdown of the media house.
The regulator said it was continuing consultations with government stakeholders following the disruption of broadcasting services at NMG outlets.
“As communicated in my statement of 30 June 2026, consultations are ongoing among the relevant Government stakeholders with a view to resolving issues related to the disruption of broadcasting services at the Nation Media Group outlets,” the letter states.
UCC also referred NAB to a statement issued by the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Justine Kasule Lumumba, who said the disruption resulted from a security-led inquiry instituted by President Yoweri Museveni.
According to the minister, the inquiry involves the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), other security agencies and technical experts.
The Commission said it appreciated NAB’s patience and pledged to provide further updates as consultations progress.
The latest communication comes after security personnel on June 28 surrounded Nation Media Group’s headquarters in Namuwongo and broadcast facilities at the Kampala Serena Conference Centre, effectively taking several of the company’s television, radio and newspaper operations off air. The affected outlets included NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM, Dembe FM, Daily Monitor, The EastAfrican and other NMG platforms.
The shutdown followed public statements by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who announced on social media that Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda had been closed and would not resume operations without his approval. The military chief did not publicly provide detailed reasons for the action at the time.
The closure prompted concern from local media organizations, including the National Association of Broadcasters, which described the action as a threat to media freedom and called for urgent engagement with government authorities. UCC initially said it was gathering verified information before issuing a comprehensive position.
International press freedom organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and Amnesty International, also condemned the shutdown, calling for the immediate restoration of the media houses’ operations and unrestricted access for journalists.
Although Nation Media Group has maintained some of its digital publishing operations, negotiations between the company and government authorities over the reopening of its broadcast and print operations have continued.
