Uganda electricity distribution company limited (UEDCL) has launched an anti- bush burning campaign due to losses being incurred on poles burning down as a result of bush burning in districts like Adjumani, Amuru and parts of Gulu city,
According to Janan Kizza the in charge of communication and cooperate affairs 47 electricity distribution medium voltage poles have been destroyed by fire during this dry season.
The official launch of the campaign on 11th February 2026 was focusing on sensitising the community in North-East, Northern and West Nile where the effects of bush burning has already affected the infrastructures belonging to company
He added that they will use leaders at all levels including traditional leaders to help them convey the message about the dangers of bush burning.
‘’ We have chosen to sensitise the community much us we know that the law is also there to help us deal with people who might be found burning our infrastructure” he said.
Paul Ssewava Ssempira, the head of commercial services in North and Eastern Uganda said on Sunday 8th February they lost three electricity distribution poles at custom corner in Gulu city which took them fifteen hours to restore power to over one thousand six hundred customers who made losses that he could not disclose at time of the press conference but he was very clear that as the a company they incurred a loss of 38 million in the 15 hours.
How ever Karabyo Poline the area manger assured the public that they are committed to ensuring stable supply of power to their connected clients and increasing customer numbers.
She added that as Gulu office since they took over from UMEME they have connected 2,375 customers in Amuru, Gulu, Omoro and Oyam which is their area of operation and 983 connections are still pending.
Since 1 of April 2025, 67 suspects have been arrested, 17 tried of vandalism and 8 are already convicted up on trial.
