The Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), James Musinguzi, has assured the public that the authority is engaging various regions across the country, including the West Nile Sub-region, to establish a wildlife education center.
Musinguzi said the initiative is intended to promote domestic tourism, reduce human-wildlife conflicts, create employment opportunities, and increase community participation in the tourism sector.
He added that local communities will also benefit through business opportunities and the supply of goods and services to the proposed center.
The Moyo District Tourism Officer, Alex Kayola, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major boost to local economic development.
He noted that the establishment of the center would attract investments and encourage the growth of businesses within the host community.
“Other business opportunities, such as accommodation facilities including guest houses and lodges, will also grow wherever the centre is established,” Kayola said.
The Secretary for Administration, Planning and Production in Moyo District, Isaac Drajuruga, said the proposed conservation centre would expand the region’s revenue base, especially if communities are willing to provide land for its establishment.
Meanwhile, a resident of Aluru Sub-county, Martin Ulego Isoma, suggested that the facility be established in Dufile Sub-county if resources permit. He argued that the area has experienced persistent human-wildlife conflicts, particularly involving elephants, for more than a decade.
“I would suggest that the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Centre be established in Dufile Sub-county, where elephants have threatened the lives and livelihoods of local residents for over ten years,” Isoma said.
Meanwhile, the Government has allocated more than UGX 567.32 billion to the tourism sector in the 2026/2027 financial year. The funding will support destination marketing, wildlife conservation, tourism infrastructure development, and efforts to position Uganda as a leading tourism and investment destination.
