NILE POST
A village chairperson in Nabweru Division has dumped uncollected garbage at the division headquarters in protest against what she described as authorities’ failure to clear waste generated during the recent nationwide sanitation exercise.
Dorothy Nankya, the LC I Chairperson of Nabweru South Cell I, transported truckloads of garbage to the offices of the Town Clerk and Division Health Inspector after residents allegedly left the waste near her home following the clean-up campaign.
Nankya said she had repeatedly asked division officials to remove the garbage but received no response, forcing her to deliver it to the offices of the authorities responsible for sanitation.
“Residents dumped this garbage near my fence after the nationwide cleaning exercise. I have repeatedly asked the division authorities and health officials to collect it, but nothing has been done. I had no option but to bring it to the offices of those responsible,” she said.
She accused division leaders and sanitation officials of failing to clear garbage from roads and other public spaces in her area, saying the delays had frustrated residents.
The incident happened in the presence of Nabweru Division Mayor Samuel Mugabi and other local leaders.
Witnesses said some officials tried to stop Nankya from offloading the garbage, but she insisted and directed truck drivers to continue with the dumping.
Mugabi condemned the action but acknowledged that the division was facing challenges in clearing waste from several affected areas.
“We do not support dumping garbage at government offices. We are still in the process of collecting waste from all parts of the division, and I ask residents to remain patient as we complete the exercise,” he said.

The mayor said garbage collection remains a government responsibility and called for stronger waste management systems after community sanitation campaigns.
“Government should establish a reliable system to ensure that all garbage collected during such exercises is promptly removed so that communities are not left with this burden,” Mugabi said.
Some local leaders, however, defended Nankya’s action, saying the protest was aimed at drawing attention to the growing waste management challenges and pushing authorities to respond faster.
